Get ready to witness one of nature's most awe-inspiring, once-in-a-lifetime spectacles as the total solar eclipse adorns the skies over Upstate New York this very special year! As celestial enthusiasts eagerly anticipate this rare event (this is the fist solar eclipse across the Adirondacks!), western & northern Upstate is an ideal area for locals and travelers of all kinds. For some, you've already booked your lodge room and bought tickets to a viewing party. For others... well... you're still figuring things out. That's where we come in to help! Here are a few of the best spots to be during the total solar eclipse across New York.
Don't forget to bring extra snacks for the road, plenty of water, your eclipse glasses, a car full of gas (maybe even an extra gas can!) or a fully charged e-car, picnic supplies if needed, sunscreen, medications, a good pair of boots, tick spray, any kayaks for river explorations, a phone charger, charging cable, and whatever camera you're planning on using to capture incredible photos of the sky! Definitely expect delays and heavy traffic throughout the state, so be prepared for anything and everything.
Here's some more important information to know for the day of the eclipse:
• There may be no cell service where you are - be careful! (And don't forget to download your favorite Spotify playlist)
• Cell towers will probably not be working due to the high influx of people, but you can still dial 911 for emergencies. If you have a wifi booster, bring it!
• Prepare for the weather and watch out for mud! Bring layers, an extra jacket, another pair of socks, and sturdy hiking boots - stay warm out there.
• Do NOT look directly at the sun! Bring those eclipse glasses for safety. Sunglasses will not protect your eyes.
• Be careful on trails. Remember the two adages: “Leaves of Three, Leave them Be!” and “Don’t be a Dope and Touch the Hairy Rope.” Don't forget tick spray, too!
• As said by Smoker Bear: "Only YOU can prevent wildfires!" Always drown out those campfires before leaving your campsite or going to sleep in your tent.
